THE REALITY
A Life Decided Before She Can Read
Imagine a life where your major milestones are decided for you before you are old enough to read. When to marry, who to marry, and how many children to bear — decisions most of us take for granted — are stripped away from a young girl in Samburu.
Through a traditional practice known as “beading,” a girl can be betrothed as early as five years old, married off by nine, and a mother the moment her body allows. By eighteen, she faces a harsh cyclical struggle, often left entirely to fend for herself and her children.
Why Does This Happen?
A woman in Samburu spends her entire lifetime searching for water and food to sustain her family. While men journey far away to look for pasture with livestock, women are left behind to care for children, the elderly, and the homestead.
Under the crushing weight of this exhaustion and scarcity, a mother is often forced to betroth her young daughter just to bring food into the home.
But SELDI is rewriting this narrative.
OUR STRATEGIC APPROACH
From Survival to Self-Agency
We address the root causes of early marriage by tackling both economic vulnerability and resource scarcity at the same time.

Securing Clean Water
We drilled a strategic borehole within the community. By bringing water close to home, girls are freed from the daily burden of fetching water — releasing them to attend school.

Disrupting Early Marriage
We provide a strategic micro-grant of just $1 a month to a mother — matching the exact amount a traditional suitor would offer. This keeps the girl safe, protected, and firmly in the classroom.

Creating Sustainable Livelihoods
The $1 grant combined with time saved from fetching water gives mothers the foundation they need to establish small businesses through our Merry-Go-Round collective.
